The big Short

  • Categories:

The Big Short is a 2015 Oscar-winning film adaptation of author Michael Lewis’s best-selling book of the same name. The movie, directed by Adam McKay, focuses on the lives of several American financial professionals who predicted and profited from the build-up and subsequent collapse of the housing and credit bubble in 2007 and 2008.

Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire is a movie about a love story that has the audience rooting for the main characters to reunite and for the Jamal to win the money to change his life. While that is the surface view of the movie, Slumdog Millionaire holds a much deeper meaning. The examination of violence throughout the movie is only one of the many different themes that are depicted in the movie but an important one. Dharavi, the setting, gave us a better understanding of what slums are like and the kinds of violence that surrounds the people of that community every day. The examination of Jamal’s character and his experiences of violence showed that terror and punishment are ways that are used to treat people as the “Other”. The consequences of the sexist relationships between Latika and other male characters result in different types of violences. On a more meaningful level Slumdog Millionaire informs us that there are many different forms of violence that surround and shape our everyday lives as seen in Jamal’s character.

40 years ago, On 7 June 1968, women sewing machinists at Ford Motor Company Limited's Dagenham plant in London walked out when, as part of a regrading exercise, they were informed that their jobs were graded in Category B (less skilled production jobs), instead of Category C (more skilled production jobs), and that they would be paid 15% less than the full B rate received by men. Same happened in 1811 when weaver workers attacked shops in villages in Nothinghamshire and in the suburb of Nottingham city, and event known as the grievances of the luddites. In both cases innovations introduced undermined the skilled workers operating on the factories. It has happened and it will happened again. In those days the humans outperformed machines. However, with the advent of the Industry 4.0 it is not clear that humans will continue outperforming machines in many jobs. This is an open questions to reflect upon
